D-Day for Orlando Pirates with chance to close out Betway Premiership title race

Who will be champions, finish in the top eight and succumb to relegation could all become clearer in what is a pivotal round for many clubs.

Here are the talking points ahead of the games.

One more win

The big one is in Soweto, where Orlando Pirates can all but clinch the title, though not mathematically so.

Victory over Durban City at home would see them level on 68 points with Mamelodi Sundowns, who have completed their league season, but with a vastly superior goal difference of +44 to The Brazilians’ +36.

Assuming a 1-0 win over City, Pirates would need to lose 9-0 to Orbit College in their final game just to level things on goal difference. Impossible.

So they will not lift the trophy on Saturday, but in reality it would be job done and they can look forward to doing so on the final weekend as they seek a first league championship since 2012.

Pirates are currently on an 11-game unbeaten run (W8 D3) and have conceded just three times in their last seven games, while scoring 22 themselves, more than three per match.

They beat City 2-0 in the reverse fixture in November.

Keeping up momentum

Kaizer Chiefs have already secured third place and CAF Confederation Cup football next season as they go to AmaZulu in their penultimate game.

It pits them against former coach Arthur Zwane and will be an intriguing clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, despite neither side having all that much riding on it.

Usuthu have more or less secured a top-five finish, but would like to keep picking up points to finish fourth, which would be a good achievement for the club.

Chiefs just want to keep the momentum and “feel-good” factor going, with lots of talk around Naturena about the coaching staff for next season.

Three of the last four meetings have ended in a draw, with the other a 3-1 win for Chiefs in Durban last season. But Usuthu also have a recent 4-0 home success from 2023.

Staving off relegation

Chippa United are now onto their joint-record sixth coach of the Betway Premiership season, with Hlanga Dikeni in charge and a real sense of panic around the club.

A run of a single win in their last 10 league games (D4 L5) has sucked them back into the relegation mix after it had looked as though they would coast to the end of the campaign a few weeks back.

Chippa are four points above the automatic relegation place but just two above the relegation play-off spot, with the teams behind them starting to pick up points.

They host a Lamontville Golden Arrows side that needs one more win to secure MTN8 qualification for next season and who still have an eye on a top-five finish.

These two played out a tepid 0-0 draw on the final day of the 2022/23 season when Chippa needed a point to survive, a result that cost Golden Arrows a top-eight place that season. Neither side seemed interested in scoring that day.

A draw has been the most common result between these two down the years, with 11 in 24 meetings. Golden Arrows have seven wins to Chippa’s six.

Basement boys

Bottom side Magesi FC go to Siwelele needing a win to keep their survival hopes alive, though a draw would also be handy depending on other results.

Siwelele’s last game was that extraordinary 7-4 loss to Sundowns, the most goals ever scored in a single Betway Premiership game. This is unlikely to be a repeat of that.

They are in ninth place and trail Golden Arrows above them by four points. They need a win to push for a top-half finish, so have to go for it.

That could play into Magesi’s hands, though they remain the only side in the topflight without an away win this season (D6 L8). Siwelele have only two home defeats (W6 D6).

Magesi are at home to Richards Bay on the final day of the season, so will feel that if they can get something here, they have a real chance of staying up.

Draw kings

Second-bottom Marumo Gallants are trying to draw their way to safety, having taken a single point from their last five games, but it is a risky strategy as they go to Polokwane City.

The latter have more or less secured their top-eight place, so have little to play for, but are themselves winless in four (D2 L2).

Gallants have a single league victory since November (D7 L10), which came away at Chippa United.

The only thing giving them hope of survival is the fact they won their first two league games of the campaign, including against champions-elect Pirates, but since then they have won just two of their next 26 league fixtures.

They have two wins against Polokwane City in their history … and both have come away from home.

Form on the road

Orbit College sit outside the bottom two for now but have a tricky away day at Stellenbosch FC before facing Pirates on the final day in what is easily the toughest run-in for the sides in trouble.

Stellenbosch still have faint hopes of a top-eight finish, so will push for the win, but are rather limping over the line in the league this season.

Orbit are three points above the automatic relegation place but have by far the worst goal difference in the league at -22, which is effectively worth another point to their rivals.

They did win on their last road trip at Magesi and are in fact unbeaten in three away games after draws at Durban City and Gallants.

They have picked up 12 points on the road this season, the same number as at home, and have actually scored one more goal away from home.
