Preview

The Euro 2024 quarterfinals kick off this Friday with two exciting showdowns. Spain and Germany lock horns in the earlier fixture before France clash with Portugal later that same day in a highly-anticipated 3 p.m. ET (19:000 GMT) showdown. Volksparkstadion will be the venue for this battle as two underperforming heavyweights look to make the semifinals at the other's expense.

Both sides entered the competition as heavy favorites. However, none have impressed so far, with Portugal barely beating Slovenia in the round of 16 to book this fixture.

After overcoming Czechia 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time winner and triumphing over Türkiye 3-0 in their first two matches, A Seleção went on to lose 2-0 in their final group-stage fixture. Roberto Martinez's men had already won the group by then and thus the defeat was brushed under the rug, but the Euro 2016 winners were yet to click on the pitch.

Against Slovenia, Cristiano and Co. struggled to test Jan Oblak. The game ended goalless after 90 minutes and thus went into extra time, with Ronaldo missing a penalty in the 105th minute. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner broke down in tears after failing to convert his spot kick despite there being 20 minutes left on the clock but the reason was obvious to all who watched the game: Portugal could have easily been eliminated.

In fact, had Benjamin Sesko converted any of his two one-on-one moments with goalkeeper Diogo Costa, Portugal's tournament would have come to an end. Instead, the game went to a penalty shootout, with Costa saving all three spot kicks from the Slovenians.

Cristiano converted his — though Oblak guessed right and nearly got a hand to it — to make amends for his earlier miss. Regardless, questions continue to be asked of A Seleção despite the victory.

Despite his historic season in the Saudi Pro League, calls for Ronaldo to be dropped have reached an all-time high as the 39-year-old is yet to score.

Nonetheless, with Cristiano confirming after the Slovenia win that this will be his final European Championship, the iconic goalscorer will look to end this chapter by lifting the trophy. However, he must captain his nation to a victory over France first.

The French, meanwhile, will be out for revenge in this rematch of the Euro 2016 final. Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann are the two remaining players from that unforgettable defeat while N'Golo Kante was on the bench to watch Eder's extra-time goal deny Les Bleus the title on home soil.

The two-time FIFA World Cup winners locked horns with their continental rivals in the UEFA Nations League four years later, picking up four points against Portugal to pip them to the Nations League finals. However, Deschamps' men will want to go a step further and eliminate Cristiano and Co. from Euro 2024.

Unfortunately, Mbappe and Co. have been poor all tournament as well. France are yet to score a goal from open play, with the three goals they have netted so far coming courtesy of two own goals and an Mbappe penalty.

As a result, the Qatar 2022 runners-up shockingly missed out on the top spot in Group D. Instead, they finished second behind Austria after racking up only five points in the group stage — Rangnick's side picked up six points.

The French locked horns with Belgium in the round of 16 and while they eliminated the Red Devils yet again, Deschamps' attack failed to impress. The plaudits went to William Saliba, Jules Kounde, Theo Hernandez, and N'Golo Kante while a deflected Randal Kolo Muani shot secured them the victory.

Mbappe will want to impress when he crosses paths with his idol. However, the newly signed Real Madrid ace has cut a frustrated figure in this competition.

Furthermore, Les Bleus will want — and likely need — to beat Portugal in normal time after witnessing Diogo Costa's penalty shootout heroics. To accomplish this, Deschamps' men will have to up their performance.

Team news

Portugal: Roberto Martinez's men played 120 minutes in the round of 16, and as a result, questions will be asked about the 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo who started all three group-stage matches. Nonetheless, the talisman should lead his side in this game, though there are questions as to whether Rafael Leao and Bernardo Silva will join him or whether Diogo Jota and Francisco Conceicao will break into the lineup.

France: Deschamps will be forced into change as Adrien Rabiot is suspended for this tie. Eduardo Camavinga and Youssouf Fofana are options if the manager opts for a like-for-like replacement. Ousmane Dembele is also in contention should the boss opt for an attacker following their lackluster display against Belgium. Elsewhere, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano are expected to keep Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate on the bench.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 semifinals?

The winner of Portugal vs. France will face Spain or Germany in the last four.
