Preview

The Euro 2024 round of 16 comes to a wrap on Tuesday, with Austria and Türkiye facing off in the final game of the last 16. Red Bull Arena will be the venue for this 3 p.m. ET (19:00 GMT) showdown as Ralf Rangnick's side aim to make European Championship history.

Austria enter this fixture high on confidence. The central European nation were drawn into Group D alongside France and the Netherlands and were thus expected to either crash out in the first round or scrap through as one of the best third-placed teams in the competition.

Instead, Das Team shocked everyone by winning the group, finishing ahead of Les Bleus with six points, one more than the two-time FIFA World Cup winners.

Interestingly, the tournament did not get off to a fantastic start for Rangnick's men. In fact, they lost their opening game against France, going 1-0 down courtesy of Maximilian Wöber's own goal. However, things clicked for Austria from then on.

Sabitzer and Co. dispatched Poland 3-1 on Matchday 2 before beating the Netherlands 3-2 in one of the games of the tournament, with Marcel's 80th-minute goal securing them the three points and the top spot — France were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland in the other match.

And with that, the Austrians have emerged as a potential dark horse. Das Team have never made it to the quarterfinals of a European Championship, and a rematch with the Netherlands could be on if they make the last eight. However, the Group D winners must first focus on getting past the round of 16 for the first time in history.

Türkiye's path to the round of 16 was not as electric as their opponent but the Euro 2008 semifinalists fought tooth and nail to secure progression nonetheless.

The Crescent-Stars went to war with Portugal, Georgia, and Czechia in Group F, finishing as runners-up to group winners — surprise, surprise — Portugal. Furthermore, Vincenzo Montella's side finished with six points (level with Cristiano and Co.) but missed out on top spot thanks to their 3-0 loss to A Seleção.

Arda Guler and Co. kicked off their campaign with an unforgettable 3-1 victory over Georgia, with the Real Madrid starlet scoring one of the goals of the tournament when the game was tied at 1-1. Against the Portuguese, Türkiye lost 3-0, with a mixture of fortune and a comical own goal contributing to this frustrating defeat.

As a result, they entered the final matchday as both favorites to join Portugal in the round of 16 and at risk of crashing out. However, an action-packed 2-1 win over nine-man Czechia secured qualification.

That result was crucial as it helped the Crescent-Stars finish second and avoid a showdown with Spain — Georgia, who finished third, met La Furia Roja and were thrashed 4-1. Nonetheless, Tuesday's clash with Austria should be difficult.

These two nations have locked horns six times over the past two decades, making this match-up a familiar sight. While bragging rights are up for grabs, a spot in the quarterfinals matters most, and neither side will want to miss out on that.

Team news

Austria: Patrick Wimmer is suspended. Meanwhile, Marko Arnautovic will be vying for a start after scoring against Poland. Meanwhile, Konrad Laimer, who was benched in the win over the Netherlands, will also be hoping to return to the lineup.

Türkiye: Hakan Calhanoglu and Samet Akaydin are both suspended. However, Abdulkerim Bardakci will return from suspension and should partner Merih Demiral in defense. Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz are two youngsters who could also make a difference in this tie.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals?

The winner of Austria vs. Türkiye will face Romania or the Netherlands in the last eight.
