Ajax and Girona manager Michel 'closing in on full agreement'

According to ESPN, Ajax and Míchel are negotiating the fine details, primarily the length of the Spaniard's contract and the composition of his staff. Both parties are intent on reaching a full agreement soon.

Míchel has been linked with Ajax throughout the season, during which the Amsterdam giants struggled to reach European football under three different managers.

John Heitinga was fired in October, after which interim manager Fred Grim was demoted in March. Former Barcelona attacker Óscar García eventually led Ajax to the UEFA Conference League qualifiers after finishing fifth and winning the play-offs.

It is not yet known what role Óscar García, who joined the club as manager of Jong Ajax, will have within Ajax.

Míchel reached the UEFA Champions League with Girona for the first time in club history in 2024, but was relegated from La Liga with the Catalan outfit last weekend. Girona finished 19th in La Liga with 41 points, one point below Levante, Osasuna, and Real Mallorca.

Girona fans criticised Míchel, whose side failed to win any of their last eight league games, for being distracted by a potential move to Ajax amid a heated relegation battle. The 50-year-old manager was also linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen, who reportedly turned down the deal due to Míchel's "poor grasp of the English language."

Míchel will join Ajax during the first full transfer window of newly appointed technical director Jordi Cruyff, whose extensive Spanish network stems from his time with FC Barcelona.

Cruyff, son of legendary Dutch footballer and manager Johan Cruyff, moved to Spain at a young age with his father and spent most of his life there, particularly in Catalonia.
