Super Lig Weekly: Osimhen and Lang step up as Galatasaray win thriller to clinch 26th title

After a thumping loss away at Samsunspor the previous week, Galatasaray had missed the chance to wrap up the league, so they were getting another bite at the cherry. This time, it was in front of their home fans, and against a team battling relegation, Antalyaspor.

Expectations were that it would be a straightforward job and the title race wouldn't go down to the final gameweek of the season - which could end up being immensely nerve-racking. Gala wanted to get it done there and then.

Antalya, meanwhile, have been involved in a titanic relegation battle, with several teams in genuine contention to go down (more on that later). They have been fighting for their lives and are in desperate need of results.

The game began with Galatasaray predictably dominating possession, yet they were weirdly flat and lethargic, not playing with the impetus of a team trying to win the league. It was as if they were on the beach already.

It was a bit of a chore to watch, as they poked and prodded with no real intent.

The crowd grew more frustrated by the minute, and on the cusp of half time, they received a major hammer blow.

Antalya ventured forward - a rare sight in this game - and a cross was put into the box. Soner Dikmen got onto the end of it, flicking the ball into the back of the net with his head and/or shoulder.

Was this title race going to the final day? Were Gala going to produce one of the biggest collapses seen in Turkey, considering the race was done and dusted a few weeks ago?

Manager Okan Buruk brought on Noa Lang and Mario Lemina at half time, and the subs worked a treat.

Gala started the second half infinitely better, playing with a spring in their step and looking to be more incisive. A lot of that was down to Lang, who was marvellous when he came on, driving and beating players at will.

They eventually got their equaliser 10 minutes into the second half, when the Dutchman's cross was headed back across goal by Baris Alper Yilmaz, and Lemina found himself free in the penalty area to nod home.

That felt like the turning point. But more drama.

Just five minutes later, Antalya were awarded a free kick from some distance out. Considering how good Ugurcan Cakir is, they'd need to produce a bit of magic to beat him.

Soner did just that. The Turk whipped a truly sensational striker into the top corner, and suddenly, things were looking extremely different at both ends of the table.

Yet Gala got the response they needed just two minutes later.

A penalty was awarded to the Istanbul side after Victor Osimhen went down in the penalty area. On replay, there was contact, but it was extremely minimal. It was a soft decision.

The Nigerian himself stepped up and slotted home to make it 2-2 with around 25 minutes to go.

They knocked, and knocked, and knocked on the door. Mauro Icardi came on as they hunted a winner, but time was running out quickly.

Finally, though, with two minutes to go of normal time, they finally found the crucial winner.

After a bit of pinball in the penalty area, the ball came to Lang. He squared it nicely to Osimhen in front of goal, and the centre forward poked home courtesy of a big deflection to score his 15th - and most important - Super Lig goal of the season.

Wild celebrations ensued as players and staff ran onto the pitch to rejoice.

There was time for more. With Antalya throwing players forward in search of an equaliser, they were hit on the counter.

A long ball found Icardi, who did truly exceptionally to hold on to it and beat the defenders. He put in a lovely cross for substitute Kaan Ayhan of all people to slot home, sealing a thrilling 4-2 victory and a 26th Super Lig title for Galatasaray.

The final whistle blew and the real celebrations commenced, not just in the stadium, but in the city of Istanbul. A record equalling fourth straight league title, matching the feat Galatasaray themselves achieved between 1996 and 2000.

It is a truly amazing accomplishment, and despite the fact that this season they have struggled to play their best football in the league - largely due to juggling Champions League football - it isn't to be underestimated the level of dominance they have asserted.

Manager Okan comes under criticism for his style of play, but he deserves massive credit for his man-management and how he has looked after his squad.

Players like Osimhen, Baris, Ugurcan and Abdulkerim Bardakci deserve the most praise. They have all enjoyed excellent seasons and contributed massively, and in my opinion, Ugurcan has been the Super Lig Player of the Season.

Fans showered the players with love after the game, and Icardi - a club legend who may be leaving this summer if a new contract isn't agreed - got what looked like an emotional goodbye.

Reports have come out in the last few days that talks are ongoing, and there is a chance that he could stay. Whether that is the right decision or not is another discussion entirely, given that he is no longer the player he once was, but he does mean a hell of a lot to the club.

He was the man who essentially won them their first two titles of this four-peat and has captured the imaginations of many young fans with his goal-scoring exploits and personality. Time will tell what happens.

It will be a busy summer for Galatasaray as they attempt to have a mini-rebuild of the team. But for now, they can celebrate.

A quick word on Fenerbahce, Trabzonspor and Besiktas.

Former Manchester United man Fred bagged a brace as Fener beat Turkish Cup finalists Konyaspor 3-0, securing their spot in the Champions League qualifying stage next season.

However, it has been a failure of a season for them. They have now gone 12 years without a Super Lig title, as they tackle an uncertain few months searching for a new manager, and voting for a new President.

Trabzonspor finished the season in third place, placing themselves in the qualifiers for the Europa League. On the weekend, they claimed a fine 2-1 win at Besiktas.

While it didn't really mean too much for either team in terms of league position, claiming a win at one of their rivals' homes is always pleasing and gives them bragging rights.

It was Trabzon's first win in five games, and they will feel they missed a huge trick and could have finished second. However, all in all, considering where they were last season, Fatih Tekke has clearly improved the team, and they are looking in a strong position for the next campaign.

Besikas will head into the Conference League qualifiers next season, but it has been another really disappointing campaign for them. They don't look like they are making much progress, despite spending decent sums of money, and there is now huge pressure on manager Sergen Yalcin.

Relegation fight goes to final day

It is impossible not to talk about the relegation battle. Kayserispor and Karagumruk have already been relegated to 1. Lig, with Erzurumspor and Amedspor taking their spots in the Super Lig after securing automatic promotion.

Erzurumspor won 1. Lig and will return to the top division for the third time in their history, while Amedspor - known for their Kurdish identity - are in the Super Lig for the first time.

The battle for promotion continues, with the playoffs currently ongoing.

Anyway, in terms of the relegation fight in the Super Lig, there are currently four teams who could all finish 16th, setting up a thrilling final day.

Antalya currently occupy the final relegation spot, but are two points off Genclerbirligi and three off Kasimpasa and Eyupspor.

The permutations are a bit complicated, but I will try to explain them as best as I can.

Antalyaspor have the easiest fixture of the four, at home against Kocaelispor. If they win, they have a very good chance of staying up.

Genclerbirligi host Trabzonspor in the Turkish Cup semi-final tomorrow, before their final game of the league season away to Trabzon.

It is extremely tough on paper, but their opponents have nothing to play for. If Antalya win, Genclerbirligi must also win to guarantee their safety. If Genclerbirligi draw, Antalya will be safe, and they will then need one of the other two competitors to lose.

For Kasimpasa and Eyup, a draw for both would keep them up. Losses may also keep them in the Super Lig, but it depends on other results, of course.

Kasimpasa host champions Galatasaray, while Eyup visit Fenerbahce. Again, they are the hardest possible games on paper, but those teams are playing for nothing, so it adds another dimension.

Hopefully that makes sense. It is going to be a really entertaining final day!

Team of the Week

Fenerbahce midfielder Fred is the Flashscore Player of the Week, according to our very own internal ratings system.

He is joined by teammate Kerem Akturkoglu, while Trabzon duo Ozan Tufan and Oleksandr Zubkov, as well as Osimhen, also make the starting XI.
