Tosin nets late equaliser for Lorient as PSG drop points in Ligue 1 title race

PSG - who shuffled their pack ahead of next week’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich - took the lead in comical style after six minutes when Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo pushed Desire Doue’s cross straight into Ibrahim Mbaye, and the ball rebounded into the net.

Undeterred, Lorient were level after 12 minutes, after a simple ball in from Panos Katseris found Pablo Pagis, who made no mistake with a side-footed volley.

That gave the visitors some impetus, with Katseris proving to be a handful down PSG’s left side.

All the hosts could muster over the next 15 minutes of play was a wayward effort from Senny Mayulu in what was a lacklustre showing, and that prompted an animated outburst from Luis Enrique.

Lucas Hernandez was unlucky with an attempt that hit the woodwork, and Lee Kang-in’s fierce drive was kept out by Mvogo, but any good interplay was coming from the visitors, with Noah Cadiou particularly impressive.

Lorient’s low block after the break was proving problematic for PSG to get past, with Doue’s wild long-range free-kick after 51 minutes the closest they came to restoring their lead in the early stages of the second half.

As the hour mark approached, the hosts were in the ascendancy without really troubling the visitors, and that led to Joao Neves and Warren Zaire-Emery entering the fray.

The latter’s first touch was a drilled shot from the edge of the area, which found the net after a slight deflection and marked his first home league goal since August 2024.

The goal forced Lorient to abandon their back five, which in turn gave PSG more space in which to work. Despite this, debutante Pierre Mounguengue’s poor backpass went straight to Lorient substitute Aiyegun Tosin, who outpaced the home defence and slotted home the second equaliser for his first of the season.

Tosin would’ve bagged a late winner if not for a smart save from Renato Marin, while Mayulu hit the post with two minutes left at the other end. That ensured a share of the spoils, which means PSG hold a temporary seven-point lead over nearest pursuers Lens, whom they play in 11 days. Lorient are now winless in their last six away league matches (D3, L3), and will remain in ninth place, whatever happens in the remainder of this round of fixtures.
