Ghana awarded host nation at 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations

Ghana is set to host the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after the Confederation of African (CAF) Football officially awarded the West African nation the rights to stage the prestigious youth tournament.

The decision was communicated in a formal letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association's General Secretary, Lawyer Prosper Harrison Addo, Esq., and marks a significant vote of confidence in Ghana's growing reputation as one of Africa's premier football nations.

The announcement has been greeted with widespread excitement across the Ghanaian football community, coming at a time when the nation is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.

The significance of the hosting award extends well beyond logistics and football administration. Ghana last hosted the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 1999 and on that occasion, the Black Satellites rose to the occasion lifting the trophy on home soil.

28 years on, they will have the chance to do it all over again in front of their own fans.

The timing carries an additional layer of meaning as the 2027 tournament coincides with Ghana's 70th Independence anniversary.

CAF has confirmed it will work closely with the GFA and a soon-to-be-established Local Organising Committee to ensure the successful planning and execution of the tournament.

That collaboration is expected to focus on infrastructure readiness, logistics, security, and the overall fan experience, all aimed at delivering a world-class event worthy of Africa's growing football stature.

Ghana's selection is no surprise to those who have watched the country step up to host major football and sporting events in recent years.

The nation's credentials as a reliable and passionate tournament host are well established and growing with each passing year.

Ghana hosted the senior Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, a tournament that saw Egypt retain the trophy, winning its record-extending sixth title by defeating Cameroon 1-0 in the final.

A decade later, Ghana hosted the 2018 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first time the country had hosted the women's edition of the tournament.

More recently, Ghana hosted the 13th African Games from March 8 to 23, 2024, with Accra serving as the main host city alongside sub-hosts Kumasi and Cape Coast. The multi-sport continental event, which included both men's and women's football competitions at under-20 level, reinforced Ghana's ability to stage complex, multi-discipline events across multiple venues simultaneously.

Ghana also hosted the WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations in 2024, with the tournament held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.
