Kaizer Chiefs tighten grip on third place after Betway Premiership win

The victory puts Chiefs in control of their own destiny in the race for third place and CAF Confederation Cup football next season, while for Galaxy it is yet another defeat.

They may have reached the Nedbank Cup final, but their league form has been horrid.

Silva makes good

Flavio Silva had not scored for Chiefs since February but finally ended that barren run.

He had earlier fluffed a great opportunity to open the scoring when he latched onto a backpass but then dallied in getting his shot away, allowing the defence to get back in position.

But he did get his goal on 35 minutes with a header from Mdu Shabalala’s dinked cross from the byline. It was a well-placed header into the corner of the net to give Galaxy goalkeeper Ira Tape no chance.

It is a sixth goal of the season for Silva to lead the Chiefs scoring charts, and a third assist for Shabalala.

Interrupted

The game was interrupted in the 64th minute as the floodlights at FNB Stadium did not come on as the skies darkened.

It did not look too dark, but referee Moreki Lekwape decided to stop the game. The break lasted around 30 minutes.

It was a momentum-breaker for Chiefs as they were in full control of the game and pushing for a second goal.

During that interruption, the heavens opened and the rain poured down, making things more difficult for the players on the resumption.

Lilepo wraps it up

Chiefs scored their second with 15 minutes to go as Sibongiseni Mthethwa put Glody Lilepo through on goal.

He showed excellent strength to beat the defender and, as he raced towards the Galaxy box with the ball well in front of him, Rockets goalkeeper Ira Tape raced out.

Lilepo showed good pace to beat the gloveman to the ball and put it past the stranded Ivorian.

It is a fourth league goal of the campaign for the DR Congo winger.

Pack your bags

This clash was the second-last home game for Chiefs this season; they only return to FNB Stadium on the final day of the season when they host Chippa United.

Chiefs’ next seven games are all away from home, such is the oddness of the fixtures this campaign.

Chiefs have done well on the road, though, winning five of their eight fixtures to date (D2 L1), and conceding only two goals in that time. The single defeat came at Richards Bay in early March.

Only Orlando Pirates (2.25 points) are averaging more points on the road this season than Chiefs (2.13).

Where does this leave us?

Chiefs continue their march towards third place while galaxy will be nervously looking over their shoulder, though you would think they have done enough already to stay up.

Chiefs move three points clear of AmaZulu in third place and have two games in hand on the KwaZulu-Natal side, putting them firmly in the driving seat for CAF Confederation Cup football next season.

Galaxy have lost eight of their last nine league games (D1) and probably do need to arrest that run to make sure. Included in that is a 6-0 defeat to Pirates, the biggest in the club’s history.

Chiefs are next in action away at bottom side Magesi FC on Wednesday, the only midweek fixture on the calendar. Galaxy host Richards Bay next Sunday.
