Bayern Munich earn thrilling draw against Heidenheim after inspired Olise cameo

Vincent Kompany made seven changes to the side that faced Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, with the second leg of their blockbuster UEFA Champions League semi-final in mind, yet the Bundesliga champions had plenty of possession against the side desperately clinging onto their hopes of staying in the division.

Even so, they didn’t carry any real threat and were limited to shots from range, with Leon Goretzka’s effort being routinely saved by Diant Ramaj before Hiroki Ito struck wide.

Heidenheim had looked to create problems with balls into Bayern’s box and stunned their hosts in the 22nd minute when a corner was unconvincingly cleared, and Marnon Busch looped a pass that Budu Zivzivadze instinctively touched past Jonas Urbig.

The visitors showed no signs of fading, with Eren Dinkçi guiding an attempt marginally wide, shortly before racing onto a perfectly weighted Busch pass that curled behind Jonathan Tah, allowing him to poke the ball away from Urbig and over the line. Bayern halved the deficit before the break, though, as Goretzka picked out the top corner with a sublime free-kick.

A further signal of intent was made ahead of the restart, with Harry Kane, Luis Diaz, Michael Olise, and Joshua Kimmich all being introduced.

Kane picked out Nicolas Jackson with a brilliant pass for an attempt that was met with an equally impressive piece of goalkeeping, before Busch cleared Kim Min-jae’s effort off the line.

However, their defence was breached by another corner in the 58th minute as Goretzka turned home Olise’s delivery.

Olise then curled agonisingly wide, and Kimmich came even closer with a strike that cannoned off the post, before Urbig did brilliantly to deny Dinkçi from point-blank range.

Bayern continued to push forward, but Diaz’s shot fizzed past the post, and they were left in complete disbelief with a quarter-hour on the clock, when Zivzivadze burst into the box and cut inside Olise before guiding a finish into the top corner with quality that would be befitting of the Frenchman.

Yet Heidenheim suffered devastation in the 100th minute, as Olise’s strike hit the post and bounced in off Ramaj’s back to level the game.

Heidenheim at least extended their record to one loss from their last six matches, but the point leaves them three points behind St. Pauli, who play on Sunday and occupy the relegation play-off place. Meanwhile, Bayern ensure their record stands at one defeat from their last 21 matches across all competitions.
