Kaizer Chiefs on brink of landmark win in Sunday’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates

It has been a season of progress for Chiefs under co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, and the club hierarchy will face a difficult decision at the end of the campaign as to whether to allow them to continue developing the side or start again.

Chiefs have already won 13 games this term, which is five more than in the entire 2024/25 season, when they won eight, albeit in a campaign in which only 28 games were played.

And with six games to go, you would back them to get to that 2019/20 figure or more.

The AmaKhosi claimed 17 wins in that campaign under coach Ernst Middendorp, when they lost the title on the final day after being held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC.

That aside, this season is the joint-highest number of wins they have managed since they were last league champions in the 2014/15 season, when coach Stuart Baxter steered them to the title by 12 points and with 21 wins from their 30 games.

The difference this season has been the ability to turn draws into wins, which has been an issue for them in past campaigns, though fans may still point to some instances where this was not the case.

The season has been built on a rock-solid defence, with just 14 goals conceded in 24 games, the third-best record in the division. Three of those goals came the last time they met Pirates at the end of February.

Goal-scoring does remain an issue, with 28 netted so far, a little over one per game. That looks fairly dire but is in fact the fifth-best record in the division, and they have played at least one game fewer than almost every other side.
