EXCLUSIVE: Shola Ameobi says Newcastle United ready for 'tough' Arsenal test

Eddie Howe’s men have lost their last four matches in all competitions, with their most recent victory coming against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on March 14.

More broadly, the Magpies have suffered eight defeats in their last 11 Premier League games, winning only three, with no team losing more since January 25.

For Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, they are in dire need to win as they continue their title chase against league leader Manchester City.

Previewing Saturday’s clash in North London, the former Nigeria international said Newcastle should not feel any added pressure and believes confidence will come from sticking to their usual style of play.

"Every game is important, you know, irrespective of who you play. I know the team are prepared, they're ready," Ameobi told Flashscore.com at during An Evening with the Ameobis held at the Fedash Centre in Sunderland.

"It's going to be a tough match, obviously. Arsenal are going for the title, so they'll be nervous as well.

"So it's always a tough matchup against Arsenal, but I know over the last few years we've had some good results against them, so they'll be confident going into it."

Newcastle have struggled historically away at Arsenal, failing to win in their last 13 Premier League visits to the Emirates Stadium, drawing one and losing 12. They have also scored just once in their last nine league trips to North London.

With Mikel Arteta’s side aiming to complete the league double over the six-time FA Cup winners for the first time since 2020-21 following their 2-1 win at St James’ Park in September, Ameobi insists Howe’s team should focus less on the occasion and more on rediscovering their own identity.

"No, there's no pressure. The pressure comes with every game; every game has its own merits," he continued.

"Arsenal are obviously a really good side, so the pressure is going away from home and playing a really good side.

"But ultimately, I think if Newcastle do what they know they can do, which has been difficult over the last few weeks, but I think getting back to ourselves, getting back to who Newcastle know they can play, the type of game that brings the results, I think they'll be all right."

Newcastle’s last nine Premier League matches have all been decided by a single goal, with three wins and six defeats.

In top-flight history, only three teams have ever had 10 or more consecutive one-goal games: Everton (10, 1911), West Ham (10, 1964–65), and Southampton (12, 1992).

Ameobi dismisses Newcastle regression suggestion

Newcastle United enjoyed a memorable 2024–25 season, finishing fifth in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup to end a 70-year domestic trophy drought.

However, this campaign has been far more difficult, with the Magpies currently sitting 14th in the league, exiting the FA Cup in the fifth round, and being eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16 after a heavy defeat to FC Barcelona.

Despite the struggles, Ameobi insists the club has not regressed overall and views the season in a more balanced context.

"Nothing's changed. Ultimately, you can't win every season. Every competition is difficult to continue to win in," Ameobi added.

"Everyone's getting better around you. Ultimately, we've been in a lot of competitions this year, Champions League, travelling, all those things affect the team.

"Obviously, injuries as well have a big impact. On paper, it might not look like we're where we want to be, but ultimately, it's been a good season, finished in Europe, furthest we've ever finished in Europe, which is a massive achievement.

"There's still some games left, so let's see where the team finishes at the end of the season."
