Mamelodi Sundowns' home record points to CAF Champions League final place

But closer inspection might send a jitter through them. The only team to beat Sundowns at home in a second leg is Esperance, who managed it at the semi-final stage in 2024 with current Brazilians coach Miguel Cardoso at the helm.

Sundowns go into the fixture against the Tunisians with a slender 1-0 lead from the away leg in Rades, but the visitors will have fond recent memories of their history-making feat.

On that occasion, it was Esperance who held the 1-0 advantage going into the second leg in Pretoria, and they repeated that scoreline thanks to a goal from Raed Bouchniba in the 57th minute. He has since left the club for Tunisian side Monastir.

The 38 knockout ties in which Sundowns played the second leg at home have come in the Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, African Football League, CAF Cup and CAF Cup Winners' Cup since they debuted in continental competitions in 1994.

They have won 27 of those, to go with 10 draws and that single defeat.

There have been some massive wins along the way, though all came in the early rounds of the competition before the group stages.

They defeated Seychelles side Cote d'Or 11-1 in the second round in the 2019/20 season, and their compatriots La Passe 8-1 in 2022/23. The “away” leg of that tie was also played in Pretoria and won 7-0 by Sundowns.

They have played eight such ties against teams from North Africa and won three of those, to go with four draws and that loss to Esperance.

They have scored 99 goals in that time and conceded only 19, meaning they could bring up a century this weekend.

It is an illustration of how dominant Sundowns have been on their own patch, but their one aberration has been against a team that now know how to win in Pretoria, and that could make a difference on Saturday.
