Gordon and Bowen among top targets as Liverpool react to Ekitike injury blow

The shift in circumstances is forcing a more aggressive rethink of their attacking options for next season, with the French forward suffering an Achilles injury against Paris Saint-Germain that leaves him facing months on the sidelines.

The news comes at a time when the club are also facing the departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of the campaign.

It is a situation made more complex by Liverpool’s broader uncertainty - with no guarantee yet of Champions League football next season, and no full assurance that Arne Slot will remain in charge.

Ekitike’s injury, combined with Salah’s potential exit, will strip Liverpool of both reliability and cutting edge in the final third - at least while Ekitike recovers.

And the early indications suggest he will be sidelined until 2027.

While a new signing had already been part of the club’s summer plans, reinforcing the front line now looks certain.

And the situation opens up two potential routes into the market. One is to pursue a direct replacement for Salah, as had been in mind, while the other is to target a more versatile forward capable of operating across the line.

Juventus attacker Francisco Conceicao has been considered as one option from outside the Premier League, while Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig is also being closely tracked.

But, given Liverpool can not afford missteps in the market, there is a strong possibility they prioritise proven Premier League talent.

Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United is one player under consideration, having been on the club’s radar previously. With growing interest from elsewhere - including Arsenal and Bayern Munich - Liverpool may be prompted to act.

Jarrod Bowen could also enter the frame. He is long admired inside the Merseyside club, but has previously seemed unattainable - and remains strongly tied to West Ham United.

However, Liverpool have the stature to test such resolve and may explore the conditions required to make such a deal possible.

Sources indicate that Liverpool’s recruitment staff are now working to advance plans quickly, with the aim of finalising preferred options internally by May, so that they are well prepared to head into the market when it opens.
