Who has banged in the goals for Kaizer Chiefs as they find their scoring boots at last

It is a welcome change for fans, who had been left a little frustrated by their lack of potency in front of goal this season, despite controlling matches for the most part.

But led by striker Flavio Silva, winger Glody Lilepo, and young guns Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba, they have been rattling the back of the net.

Silva said this week that while he was no “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo”, given the right service, he will score goals, and he has been proven right.

He has had some fine ‘poacher’s finishes’ just this week, which Chiefs have been missing in recent seasons: a player who can hover around the six-yard box and find the back of the net.

So where have their goals come from this season? They have now scored 28 in the league (in 23 matches), one in the Nedbank Cup and 11 in the CAF Confederation Cup. They did not appear in the MTN8 and drew a blank in a 0-0 draw with Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout, as they lost on penalties in the first round.

Silva has scored nine of those 40 goals, almost a quarter, and is their leading forward. Seven of those have come in the Betway Premiership, with one each in the Nedbank Cup and Confederation Cup.

Glody Lilepo really took a liking to the latter competition and scored four times in continental matches, the most for Chiefs, to go with another four in the league and a season total of eight.

Third on the scorers list is midfielder Shabalala, with all five of his goals coming in the league.

Wandile Duba has begun to find his scoring boots again and has three league goals, all netted in his last four matches as he finishes the season in form.

Khanyisa Mayo’s goal against Magesi FC on Wednesday night was his first since September and second of the season, while the only other players to score more than once are Siphesihle Ndlovu, Vilakazi and Aden McCarthy.

Chiefs are next in action on Saturday at Polokwane City.
