Why this is one of Kaizer Chiefs’ best seasons in the last 10 years

Chiefs claimed back-to-back wins in the league with their 2-0 victory over Magesi FC on Saturday, which came after they had lost three on the bounce before that.

It has taken them to 36 points, two-thirds of the way through the campaign, a total they have bettered only once at this stage since the 2016/17 season.

That was in the 2019/20 campaign, when they looked odds-on to lift the league title under coach Ernst Middendorp and at one stage held a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

But the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the season for five months, and when they returned in the Gauteng bio-bubble, Chiefs were unable to rediscover their form.

They were pipped on the final day of the campaign by Mamelodi Sundowns after being held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC.

They have twice managed 35 points after 20 games in this run, in 2016/17 and 2021/22, when they finished fourth and fifth respectively. They will hope for better this time around as they seek third spot and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

The lowest total they had after 20 games in the last 10 years was 24 points in 2020/21, as the team suffered under a transfer ban.

Their average number of points after 20 games over that period is 31, so they are above the curve in that regard this campaign.

Their next fixture is away to struggling Orbit College on Monday, April 6, when they will expect to keep their good run going.
