Preview

England's two biggest and most successful clubs face off in the Premier League this Sunday, with Liverpool hosting bitter rivals Manchester United in their first game of 2025. However, while the home side are pursuing the 2024-25 title, the visitors have hit a new low this season and could be in for a terrible time at Anfield.

Arne Slot's side should enter this fixture with a huge smile after witnessing the results in Saturday's fixtures. Arsenal and Chelsea, regarded as Liverpool's two biggest rivals in the title race, both suffered slip-ups, drawing 1-1 at Brighton and Crystal Palace respectively.

As a result, the Merseyside giants could go eight points ahead at the summit while still boasting a game in hand if they win on Sunday. Fortunately for the Reds, form favors the home side.

Salah and Co. thrashed West Ham 5-0 in their final game of 2024, thus stretching their unbeaten run to 14 matches.

While the contract situation involving Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk remains an unwanted distraction, the players have shown no sign of slowing down on the pitch.

Additionally, Slot has already handed Manchester United a humbling defeat this season, securing a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford in early September. Luis Diaz grabbed a brace while Salah joined him on the scoresheet in a game overseen by the now-sacked Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

Ruben Amorim will be in the dugout for this game, replacing the Dutchman in late November. However, while the Portuguese tactician arrived amid excitement, things have gone from bad to worse under the former Sporting CP manager.

The 20-time English champions are currently 14th in the table and could end the weekend a whopping 13 points behind fifth-placed Newcastle.

Not many would have predicted this disastrous run in mid-December following the club's brilliant comeback victory over neighbors Manchester City. Amad Diallo delivered a Man of the Match performance to secure a late derby win, but since that triumph, Amorim's side have suffered four consecutive defeats, including three losses in a row in the league.

Those Premier League defeats came against Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle, with Manchester United conceding six and scoring nothing. In fact, Amorim has won only two of his first eight English top-flight matches, which is a far cry from his Sporting CP days.

As a result, many fear an embarrassing defeat could be on the horizon. It has been almost two years since Erik ten Hag's Manchester United lost 7-0 at Anfield in the league. While a repeat is unlikely to happen, Bruno Fernandes and Co. will need a positive result and will have to be at their best to deliver just that.

Team news

Liverpool: Joe Gomez is unavailable due to a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are back in training but will require late fitness tests. Alisson will start in goal while Trent should continue in the lineup despite Real Madrid's recent bid for the Englishman. Salah and Diaz will be Slot's main men up top.

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes should be available after seeing out his one-game suspension. Manuel Ugarte also returns from suspension but Victor Lindelof (muscle), Luke Shaw (calf), and Mason Mount (hamstring) are all injured. Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, is expected to miss this one due to illness.

Key stats

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight league encounters with Manchester United at Anfield (W4, D4).

  • The Red Devils have failed to score a single goal in their last five league trips to Liverpool.

  • Arne Slot could become the first Liverpool manager since 1936-37 to pull off a double against Manchester United in his first season in charge of the Merseyside outfit.
