Preview: Liverpool vs Atalanta

Liverpool come into this game off the back of a comfortable 3-0 win over Leicester City this past weekend, which now sees the Reds joint-tied with Tottenham on 20 points at the top of the table. However, the reigning Premier League champs sit in second as Spurs have a much better goal difference (+12) versus theirs (+5) at the moment.

In terms of the Champions League, Liverpool are in excellent position to secure their spot in the round of 16 as they already have picked up three straight wins, including a very comfortable 5-0 result as they humiliated Atalanta on matchday three earlier this month, and they will be seeking to make it four straight wins in a row in this competition for the first time in 11 years. Although they will be missing a slew of players, Atalanta have been less than stellar as of late and in their young Champions League career, have not done well against English sides.

In fact, two of their worst defeats in this competition have been against teams from the Premier League. La Dea were crushed 5-1 by Manchester City last season, and now they will head to Anfield having been thrashed 5-0 on their own home turf. Although Gian Piero Gasperini's side have won their last three away matches in this competition, they overall have won just one of their last six across all competitions and were held to a dull scoreless stalemate by Spezia, a team who were only just promoted from Serie B last season.

For a side who have started to build their reputation as having a strong attack - last term saw Atalanta become the highest-scoring side in Serie A - their showing against Spezia wasn't encouraging ahead of their trip to England, where Liverpool have kept clean sheets in their last three Champions League outings.

Atalanta's failure to score in their last European tie also marked the end of a ten-game streak in which La Dea found the back of the net, and given their poor showings lately, it's hard to see how they will be able to drastically turn things around at Liverpool's home ground on Wednesday. Even if they become the first team to score against the Reds in the Champions League this season, Klopp's side have shown that they can grab goals from everywhere - as was shown with Diogo Jota's impressive hat-trick to condemn Atalanta to defeat earlier this month.

Team news: Liverpool vs Atalanta

Liverpool: The biggest news for the hosts is the return of Mohamed Salah, who contracted COVID-19 during the international break. However, the Egyptian star, who missed his team's match against Leicester, has been cleared to play and so will be able to feature here.

Roberto Firmino, however, reportedly missed training on Tuesday, and all eyes will be peeled to see if the Brazilian ace is involved in this match.

Klopp, meanwhile, will have to make do without Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Naby Keita, while Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Joe Gomez are all still out as well.

Atalanta: Mattia Caldara, Fabio Depaoli and Mario Pasalic are all out for the visitors. In addition, Ruslan Malinovskiy could miss out after testing positive for COVID-19 during the internationa hiatus.
